Svitlana Vasylivna Dunaieva was born in 1950. For many years she lived in the village of Krasna Talivka in the Luhansk region. In 2016, when the war reached her doorstep, she lost her home to a fire and was forced to leave everything behind and seek shelter. Since then she has lived almost without interruption at a settlement for displaced people in Sviatohirsk.
This lonely elderly woman’s health has long been failing. For decades she has suffered from diseases of the heart — coronary heart disease, cardiosclerosis with heart failure, and hypertension — as well as poor circulation to the brain. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has sent her to hospital many times, as every breath is a struggle.
These health issues are compounded by constant pain in her joints and spine, a range of digestive and kidney conditions, varicose veins and chronic anaemia. She is gradually losing her hearing and needs hearing aids, while cataracts are clouding the sight in both eyes.
