As in the case of many Ukrainians, the current war has divided Lydia Vasilievna Mikhailova’s life into “before” and “after.”

Her employment history begins with the telegraph in Donetsk. Then, having graduated from business technical school, she worked for 38 years as an accountant in the payroll department of the Donetsk airport.

The current war found her a pensioner of almost 80. Lydia Vasilievna lived in a house on the outskirts of the city, literally 3 kilometers from the airport. In 2015, finding out that the Svyatogorsk Lavra was taking in refugees, she came to the monastery and has been living in the lavra’s guest house ever since.

Lydia Vasilievna has no surviving relatives. She has lost both sisters, her brother and his wife, two sons and a daughter, her mother (her father was killed in the last war) and her husband… One of her sisters was killed near Avdeevka during shelling.

Her age is beginning to tell. Now Lydia Vasilievna can no longer walk or hear. As a bedridden invalid, she requires constant care, so there are two people looking after her.

Adult diapers and medicines all cost a sizable amount of money.
